The surgery is off again. It never even got started. The fever Sam has been running all this week was enough to cause a lot of concern by the surgical staff who then requested we bring her in early. We admitted her last night so the staff could examine her and run a few preliminary tests. While we were there her fever spiked at 102.6 and they could see that her painkillers were not controlling the pain. They performed another CT scan, which showed a significant increase in the size of the mass in her liver. They believe that is causing her current problems, which has in turn cancelled the surgery. The surgeons feel we need to get more control of the liver tumors growth in order to have any chance of success.
The routine for chemo is to receive it every three weeks. That had appeared to have been working shrinking the tumors and keeping them in check. However while waiting to get the Whipple done we have had to endure numerous scheduling problems/delays. This has resulted in Sam only having chemo once during the last three months of March, April and May. So we left Sam there at the hospital trying to get the next round of Chemo started. Sam’s Doctor is out of the county and there is a little debate on what type to do next. They said they are waiting for an email response from Dr. Cohn before any decisions are made.
The good news...The scan did not show any obvious signs that cancer had spread anywhere else. So if all goes well with the next round of chemo, which shrinks that liver tumor again, hopefully they will operate quickly before the thing has time to recover and start growing again.
More good news….the next entry ( a little more upbeat and pleasant) should be by Sam. We hope to have her computer back to her within the next few days.

Thanks for the update Chris. That is indeed good news that the liver tumor has not grown. Hopefully she can now get some relief from the pain. As always, hugs and prayer for everyone. Love, Cara
Sam,
We don't write to you often but we read your blog, hear about you continuously through Cam and Carisa and think and pray for you all the time. You are a true light in our lives. Keep up the fighting spirit and let that chemo monster shrink that liver mass. We pray for quick resolution and a pain-free weekend. Much love, Debbie & George Hepburn
